This is from the ancient Benin bronze kingdom now days present Nigeria. The kingdom was founded by the son of an Ife king (oba) called Eweka in the early 14th century A.D.
The king employed artisans who lived in the same district of the city to make sculptures and figures for him, they used a technique of the lost wax casting.
The figure represents how women carry themselves and that she is not her own but belongs to her birth family and her husband after marriage. It has a broad open chest representing innocence. The wide eyes and chest shows how a person lays bare with no hidden agendas.
